why birth photography???

Usually when I tell people I am a birth photographer, I get comments like "you mean like the baby coming out and EVERYTHING?!", which always makes me laugh because it is SO much more than that.

So WHY birth photography??? And what exactly DOES a birth photographer DO??

Well, let me tell you!

The best place to start in all this is explaining what all I do as a birth photographer. Easily, the most important thing I provide my birth clients is support and friendship. I like to get to know my families because birth is such an intimate and personal time. I would never want to show up at a birth not knowing a family well enough to call them friends.

I tend to stay in contact through your whole pregnancy to keep track of your progress, but during those last few weeks especially, I will check in on you to see how you are holding up. I will double check to see if you have any last-minute changes to your birth plan, or any additional special moments you thought of that you want me to capture.

Once you reach 37 weeks along, I am on call 24/7 which basically means I put my life on hold for you.
I don't plan any trips.
I have backup baby sitters on standby.
I ALWAYS have my go bag ready.
And I NEVER leave home without my camera.
Just. In. Case.

I leave my ringer on at all times, even in the middle of the night, because you never know when baby will decide to make their grand entrance!

Once the time finally arrives, I get just as excited as the rest of your family members and friends!

I will bring coffee for your spouse and the grandparents.
I will adjust your pillows.
I will help your spouse with labor massage techniques.
I will give you privacy when you need it.
I will be your biggest cheerleader.

But yet, I will be invisible. A fly on the wall. Documenting your story as it unfolds.

Through the waves of pain as they rise and fall. And during the flood of emotions that fill your whole body when you hear baby cry for that very first time.

I'll be the first one to tell you how beautiful your new baby is.

And when you watch YOUR story for the first time, after you are home and settled with your new precious bundle, you'll see a strength in yourself that you might have never seen before. And you might ask yourself how? How was I able to capture such raw emotion and power in these images?

And my answer will be simple: Because that's what I do. ;)

If you’ve made it this far in this blog post, I hope that you have been able to deduce the WHY of birth photography all on your own.

But just in case you didn’t, here it is:

My main reason for loving birth photography so much is because having someone else there to document these moments as they are happening allows BOTH parents to focus on NOW and celebrate this new life they created!

If a mom is having a c-section, there are a lot of things that she could potentially miss out on while she is in recovery. Super important firsts that she would have never gotten to witness had I not been there such as baby’s first cry; dad, grandma, or sister holding baby for the first time; or baby being measured and weighed.

If any of those reasons aren’t enough for you, check out the video below and hopefully that will be all the reason you need <3

Meeting THIS baby for the very first time will only happen ONCE. Why not freeze that moment in time so that you can look back on it again and again as your child grows??
