Imagine you are in labor. The pain is the most intense you have ever felt, but you know that it is good pain because it leads to you meeting your precious baby. Your spouse is focused on his/her assigned task of holding up your leg, the doctor is counting through pushes, and the nurses are rushing around making sure everything is set up just perfectly for baby’s arrival. You brought your camera to make sure baby’s first moments are captured because your family lives far away and is unable to actually be there for this momentous occasion. But in the heat of the moment, with everyone focused on their own tasks, no one thinks to grab it….
Baby is born, and everyone begins to celebrate! Amid all the emotion in the room, your child’s first breath, first cry, and the first time you see your sweet babe all go undocumented.
If only you had someone whose sole task was to document these moments for you as they unfold.
While birth photography is definitely an investment, I can promise you it’s worth it. Think of this event as being similar to your wedding day. You plan and plan for months, for an event that will be over in a flash. Your photos are what you use to remember and relive the day. I have so many moms who tell me that there were so many things they forgot about, or didn’t know happened.
“When I was in labor, my only focus was me and baby. The images allow me to see so much MORE! Seeing everything from the other side coupled with what I remembering feeling in those moments is just so special” - Amanda
So what’s included in a Birth Story Package?
Obviously, each photographer is going to have their own packages set up, but here is what’s in mine:
2 one-on-one consultations so that we can get to know each other
My services on call 24/7, starting at your 37 week mark until you deliver
Unlimited time at your birth, and up to 2 hours after your beautiful baby is born
Photography AND videography coverage
A slideshow that tells YOUR story from start to finish
digital images and matching prints in a custom keepsake box and/or a custom designed heirloom album
How graphic are the photos?
Depending on your comfort level, I will capture as little (or as much) as you want. If you want photos of everything, I’ll make sure you get them. If you’d prefer to keep things a little more conservative, I can do that too.
I don’t want a stranger in the room
With two pre-birth consultations (each usually at least an hour long) and frequent check-ins throughout your pregnancy, I can promise you we won’t be strangers long! It is so important to me that you feel comfortable with the people in your birth space! If we have our first consultation, and I don’t feel like we click, I have no problem asking how you feel about us and referring you to someone you might vibe better with!
Will my photos be seen by everyone online?
Only if you want them to! All of my clients sign an optional model release, so if you would prefer to keep your photos all to yourself then you can do exactly that!
I can just have my spouse or a nurse take the pictures
Remember my “imagine scenario” from above? Birth isn’t about just mom and baby. Its about the whole family. Instead of putting your partner behind the camera, you’ll get to preserve the look of joy on his/her face the moment he/she meets your baby. I also include other family members’ reactions who are present as well. Nothing beats having a siblings reaction to a new baby frozen in an image forever!
But why is it SO expensive??
Birth is very unpredictable. Because of that, I am on call 24/7 from your 37 week mark until you deliver. This basically means that I put my life on hold until your baby arrives. I don’t plan any far away trips, or any other adventure that would make it more difficult for me to break away to come to you. Even if I am in the middle of a session, I will cut it short and reschedule to be by your side. In addition, I will stay at your birth for however long you’re in active labor through 2 hours after delivery. That means I could be there for 3 hours, or I could be there for 35 hours! Because of this unknown invested time, I have to charge accordingly.
It’s All In The Details
No two birth stories are alike – even if both stories are yours! Moms are so focused on the task at hand (rightfully so!) that they can miss the amazing-ness of birth. Your baby’s first breath, the first moment you set your eyes on him or her, and the first time you get to hold your newborn in your arms - all very important firsts that hold a ton of significance, particularly when it comes to your child.
Birth photography allots you all of these fine details and the ability to relive them any time you want - you get to have keepsakes from one of the most important moments in your life as a parent, as well as your child’s life. How many people can say that they have pictures from their very first moments on earth?
As a birth photographer, I know that this service isn’t for everyone. I understand that this is a very private and intimate time for a new family. That said, as a mother, nothing compares to seeing your own labor and delivery from an outsiders perspective. Watching the story unfold, through every tiny detail you never would have thought to notice, but your birth photographer did. My only regret is that I didn’t have a birth photographer for my first child as well.
If you have any other questions at all about birth photography, book a consultation with me! I would love to sit down and talk about your concerns, answer any questions, or just chat about birth photography in general!
